Is Jack Mackerel truly the same as Ikan Tenggiri? When it comes to Seafood especially fish types, I find it hard to find the equivalence or the exact English words for them hahah
This dish is basing on Indonesian dish for Balado, a spicy type of dish, however I’d like to call this dish as Vietnamese Mackerel, as I used Sriracha, which is Vietnamese sauce that we often serve along Pho. But then again, as an Indonesian living in Canada, whatever Indonesian dish I crave, I can not always find the correct spices and flavoring, so I make do with whatever I can find in Canada 🙂

1-2 tbsp of Vietnamese hot sauce (I used Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce, Tuong Ot Sriracha)
1 shallots, thinly sliced
2 cm ginger, crushed or sliced
1 can of Jack Mackarel (I used Grace)
1 1/2 cups boiled cubed potatoes, drain
a dash of Hungarian vegeta seasoning
2 tbsp of vegetable oil
3-4 cloves of garlic, thinly sliced
4 hot chilies (Asian ones either green or red), thinly sliced
1/2 medium onion, thinly sliced
1 green onion, thinly sliced
- Heat oil a wok, saute all kinds of onion plus the ginger and the chilies
- Add in cooked potatoes, stir well, the followed with the Mackarel with its soup. Add in Hungarian vegeta if its needed. Do not stir much after the mackarel is in the wok. Just before turning of the stove, add in the hot sauce and stir a bit.
- Serve warm with warm rice
Tips: If you dont like too fishy cooking, add more ginger and any kinds of onions, that would help for the fishy smell to be less fishy. And if you prefer it to be hot, add more chilies or the hot sauce.
