Drain the cherries, and set to side. You can dispose the syrup or use for other baking.
Separate yolks from whites, beat whites until stiff
Mix flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl
On a separate bowl, cream butter and sugars, then beat in yolks
Add in flour to butter, alternating with milk, until completely combined, then fold in stiff egg whites
Spread batter on rectangular pan, and top with cherries
Bake on preheated 350 F for 50-60 minutes
