Spicy Steamed Mussels


  • 1 kg mussels
  • 2 lemon grass sliced or finely chopped
  • 4 shallots chopped
  • 4 kaffir lime leaves fresh or dried, coarsely torn or as is
  • 2 fresh red chilies sliced
  • 1 tbsp fish sauce
  • 2 tbsp fresh lime juice or from bottle
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • green onion/curly parsley/coriander for garnish


  • Scrub clean mussels, wash thoroughly, take away beards if there were any, and discard broken ones/opened ones
  • Place into a pot and add everything else, mix well
  • Cover pot and cook mussel on high heat for 5-7 minutes, until the shells are open
  • Transfer mussels onto serving plate (using slotted spoon is best), garnish, and serve immediately
