Canadian meat pie

Ingredients

Crust

  • 4 c AP flour
  • 1 1/2 - 2 tsp coarse Kosher salt
  • 1 c golden shortening
  • 1-2 tbsp butter
  • 2 beaten eggs
  • 6-10 tbsp cold water

Filling

  • 600 g frozen ground beef thaw
  • 7 mini red potatoes or 1 large
  • 2 garlic
  • 1/2 tsp each sage thyme
  • 1/4 tsp ground mustard
  • 4 cloves
  • 2 tsp coarse Kosher salt
  • 3/4 - 1 c beef/chicken/veggie broth

Acar

  • Carrots
  • Cucumbers
  • Garlic onion
  • Hungarian hot peppers or bird eye chilies
  • Enough water
  • Vinegar sugar, salt to taste

Instructions

Acar

  • Slice veggies, place in a bowl. Pour in water and vinegar. Season with salt and sugar, it should be sweet and sour in flavor. Chill for an H or two before serving.

Filling

  • Place everything into a pot, bring to boil until no more broth, set aside
  • Boil potato or steam in microwave, mash, then add into cooked beef

Crust

  • Mix dry ingredients, add in butter and shortening until crumbly. Knead in egg and water. Divide into two crust, top and bottom
  • Place bottom crust on a pie plate, pour in filling, cover with top crust, poke holes. Brush top with beaten yolk
  • Bake at preheated 425 F for 15 mins, reduce heat to 350 F and bake for 30 mins
